Why do rats get into the attic through the eaves instead of the ground?

Roof rats are climbers. They travel fences, wires, and tree branches to reach the roofline, then work the eave line for gaps in the rafter tails, fascia, and vents. That puts the usual entry point up high at the roof edge, which is why eave sealing is central to rodent proofing your attic in San Diego.

Can the eaves be sealed without blocking attic ventilation?

Yes. Galvanized steel mesh in a quarter-inch grid screens the vents and closes the rafter gaps while the attic still breathes, and sheet metal caps fascia slots and chewed corners. The materials are rated and fastened rather than stapled, so roof rats cannot peel them back.

How can I tell if roof rats are using my eaves right now?

Look for grease trails and rub marks along the fascia, droppings on eaves or exterior lights, chewed vent screens, and scratching in the ceiling near the outside walls after dark. Because roof rats are often established for weeks before being noticed, an early free inspection helps. To book one with AtticGuard, call (858) 330-6197.
